No Power and No Lights On

The most likely time for a pc or notebook to suddenly stop working, that is when you switch on absolutely nothing happens - no lights - nothing, is after a thunderstorm or power cut.

During a storm or power cut the power lines into your house may have received a power surge.

The Power Supply Unit (PSU) and laptop adaptor are (often, but not always) built to take the full force of the power surge. But, this is at the expense of them being irreparably damaged in the process. Never attempt to repair a PSU or laptop adaptor.

Both PSUs and laptop adaptors are easily replaced and often will rectify the problem. In a few cases the power surge may have managed to damage other components, however, and in these situations it is recommended you contact a qualified computer engineer to safely test what has happened.

To prevent, or at least minimise, such experiences fit a power surge protector to your computer.
